Fine-Tune the Way You Learn Music
Fine-Tune the Way You Learn Music Suzy S. Earlier this week, in honor of Presidents Day, we mentioned a few of our nations past leaders who had musical chops and now, President Obama caught the medias attention after singing a verse from Sweet Home Chicago at a White House event to celebrate blues and Black History Month. PBS will air the event on Monday, February 27th, but you can also check out a video of the performance here. Not bad for a spur of the moment spotlight! As most musicians know, truly learning a piece of music requires more than just recognizing the notes and lyrics on the page. As a singer, your job is to know the phrasing and structure of the song inside and out, and also communicate the emotions to the audience using your attitude, expressions and movements. This may be easy for a well-versed singer, but if youre a beginner still learning proper breathing and posture, it can seem a bit overwhelming. Dont worry heres a great list of the 6 steps to learning a song, as originally posted on Performance-High.net: 1) Learning lyrics, melody, phrasing and structure This means just knowing when to sing and what to sing to get through the song start to finish successfully, even if you have to think about it. 2) Internalizing lyrics, melody, phrasing and structure Know how it all goes without even thinking about it. 3) Fine-tuning: pitch, when to take a breath, enunciation, etc. Most songs offer some kind of new challenge. Even when you know how it goes, depending on where you are as a singer you may still need to fine-tune pitch entrances, runs, fast passages, enunciation, or where to take a breath. 4) Interpretation Dynamics. Attitude. Vocal texture. Emotional expression. What are you going to do to make this song interesting and expressive? 5) Performance Does the song merit movement? Interaction with band members? Emphasis of hits or breaks? Is there a solo where youll step back as lead singer and let the focus be elsewhere? 6) Ownership After youve performed a song live for a certain amount of time, it finally gels. You figure out how to sing all of it in your style, you get inside of it, you relax into it, it becomes yours. That takes time, and also requires the previous steps. What other tips can you think of that have helped you master a song? Leave a comment below and share with the community! Like these posts? Sign up to receive daily updates right to your inbox! Mobilegeddon What Is Its Impact On Websites
Mobilegeddon â" What Is Its Impact On Websites Mobilegeddon is the latest update of Google and this has been much talked about for a reason. Its impact on the ranks of websites which are mobile friendly and on those which are not. It is a wave which affects many of the businesses that are run online. Google is on its way to make it 100% live in its data centers in due course of time. What is Mobilegeddon? Mobilegeddon is concerned with the rank a mobile friendly website has on search results and it goes on to clarify that those websites which are mobile friendly. Such websites will rank higher on the search engine result pages.. As their keyword ranking increases, their rank also goes up. Other websites, which are not mobile friendly, go down in ranking and hence there will be a natural impact on their business owing to reduced visibility on SERPs. Why should a website be mobile friendly? Mobile friendly websites make reading on the mobile comfortable. The user wouldnât have to zoom or scroll continuously while reading. The content would be in readable size and this provides a much better user experience. Also, mobile friendly websites are the need of the hour as many users employ smart phones or tablets to search for a specific business or service or product. Googleâs John Mueller confirmed this morning in a live hangout on Google+ at the 4:40 mark. The roll out has 100% begun and is actually completely live in some of the many Google data centers. Here is what John Mueller said: Itâs definitely rolling out. I know in some of the data centers its already rolled out completely. So that is something where I think you will probably see that change over the course of a week, maybe a week and a half â" something like that. From the first day to the next day, I donât think youâll see a big change. But if you compare last week to next week, then you should see a big change. And Iâve seen some blog posts out there have noticed itâs different, and tried to document the difference between the desktop results and new mobile results. So there are definitely people noticing it. Impact of Mobilegeddon â" An overview It is felt that most of the sites which run businesses which have local dependence are sure to face the impact of Mobilegeddon. If their websites are not mobile friendly, the search results would be poor for their sites owing to low ranking on SERPs and their clientele could become less. The Google rank also would be impacted by the same. Similarly, desktop searches also would face a bit of impact through this Google update. Tracking potential losers No sites are reporting major hits yet, but by looking at the Mobile-friendly tag for the top domains in Mobile. We can start to piece together who might get hit by the update. Here are the top 20 domains (in our 10K data set) as of April 21st. Along with the percent of their ranking URLs that are tagged as mobile-friendly: en.m.wikipedia.org â" 96.3% www.amazon.com â" 62.3% m.facebook.com â" 100.0% m.yelp.com â" 99.9% m.youtube.com â" 27.8% twitter.com â" 99.8% www.tripadvisor.com â" 92.5% www.m.webmd.com â" 100.0% mobile.walmart.com â" 99.5% www.pinterest.com â" 97.5% www.foodnetwork.com â" 69.9% www.ebay.com â" 97.7% www.mayoclinic.org â" 100.0% m.allrecipes.com â" 97.1% m.medlineplus.gov â" 100.0% www.bestbuy.com â" 90.2% www.overstock.com â" 98.6% m.target.com â" 41.4% www.zillow.com â" 99.6% www.irs.gov â" 0.0% Interestingly, YouTubes mobile site only shows as mobile-friendly about a quarter of the time in our data set â" this will be a key case to watch. Note that Google could consider a site mobile-friendly without showing the Mobile-friendly tag, but its the simplest/best proxy we have right now. (source http://moz.com) Impact of Mobilegeddon on educational websites Online tutoring sites which are responsive to mobile searches and those employing cloud based technology could benefit a lot from this Google algorithm. Or, if youâd prefer to feel like a local in a classic destination, you can just as easily find opportunities in tourist hotspots like France and Spain. Volunteers can also often choose whether they want to commit short-term or long-term and, depending on the program, the kind of teaching they want to do. If you donât feel ready to take on a role as a fully-fledged class teacher, how about working as a homestay tutor or teaching assistant? So, the pay might not be great, but for an experience that you can tailor to your exact tastes, volunteering is hard to beat. Read this: All about volunteer English teaching in China 2. Apply for ESL summer camp jobs. If you just have a few weeks free over the holidays, or want to dedicate a part of your gap year to teaching abroad, why not try applying for an English camp? Thereâs lots of ESL summer camp jobs throughout Europe - especially in countries like Italy and Spain. Perks often include food and accommodation (allowing you to save a few $$) and the chance to act like a big kid all summer long. Camp counselors often spend time with the kids outside of the classroom, so while youâre not teaching be prepared to get involved in activities, meal-times and campfire singalongs. Camp jobs can run through holidays all year, but summer is by far the busiest period, and positions often start appearing on job boards from January onwards. Alternatively, try searching for summer camp teaching jobs by duration or check out large international brands such as English First. Often all thatâs required for positions is a TEFL qualification and a passion for teaching! Sign up to Teach Away today for access to the latest teaching jobs around the world. 3. Apply for paid teach abroad programs that donât require degrees. If youâve already started studying but are interested in taking a break to teach abroad before you graduate, some international programs accept applications from undergraduate students. Itâs worth doing an in-depth search for any countries youâre interested in visiting, but here are a few of our favorites: South Koreaâs TaLK program accepts applications from native English speakers who have completed an associateâs degree (equivalent to two years of college/university study). Teacher training is even included as part of the package! Placements last from six months to one year. There are also opportunities in Taiwan for associate degree holders who are TEFL qualified. Schools such as HESS Education organize year-long placements. The French Cultural Embassy organizes year-long teaching assistant positions throughout France for US citizens who have completed three years of higher education. Remember that you can only teach English in a country that doesnât require you to have your degree already. So developed countries like China, South Korea and most countries in the Middle East wonât be an option for you until you get that. 4. Apply for teach abroad scholarships or grants. Itâs a little-known fact that if youâre already studying for your degree in a related field, like education or linguistics, then your institution might offer funding for students interested in work or teaching abroad for a semester at educational non-profit organizations. Some universities will even count this as course work! So be sure to look into any opportunities like this at your school. 5. Travel to where you want to teach! Finally, if youâre feeling independent you could just throw caution to the wind and book a ticket to your chosen destination! In some countries, tackling your job hunt in person is likely to have much better results than applying online. While many countries only issue work visas for teachers with degrees, there are a surprising number of opportunities for those without throughout Asia, Europe and Central and South America. A few words of advice, though. Not having a degree may limit the kind of jobs you can apply for (in this situation, having a TEFL qualification can definitely help you get your foot in the door). Instead of working regular hours with one school, the reality might mean working part time for multiple schools as well as organising your own private students, and it can take a while to build up a strong network of employers. So, if you want to teach English abroad before you graduate, bear in mind that a summer break might not be long enough to make the most of an opportunity like this. If, however youâre on a gap year, or studying abroad for a semester, it could be perfect! If you decide this is the route for you, finance-wise, it's definitely worth making sure you have enough saved to tide you over for a month or two while you set yourself up. And, as you donât know how much youâll be earning, keep aside enough for a flight home in your native currency. Finally, make sure you get the right visa so you can work legally without your degree. So, paid work or volunteering? Summer time break or all in for a year? And most importantly, where will teaching English take you? Even if you haven't got your degree yet, there are plenty of ways make your dream adventure a reality right now and teach abroad before you graduate.
On Singledom
On Singledom credit: http://www.flowers-magzine.com/Reviving_Wilted_Roses I can rejoice in the fact that itâs just me again. I no longer have the burden of another person. I can do what I want, when I want. I can enjoy the uncertainty of being a twenty-year-old junior in college. I can enjoy the uncertainty of what will happen every time I go out. I actually feel like going out again. The strange sadness that prevented me from doing anything is gone. The strange sadness of knowing that I was in the wrong relationship is gone completely. I can listen to all kinds of happy single-girl music, and then recognize that it isnât my style. I can actually figure out what my style is. I can actually figure myself out. I remember that Iâm still not fully acquainted with who I am. I have yet to fully develop my own identity. I can start by gathering qualities in myself that I admire. I admire my sensitivity, as it denotes empathy and caring. That doesnât mean that I am weak or fragile, it means that I hold consideration for others in the highest regard. It means that I am in tune with my emotions and that I have a warm, open, heart. I know that I am stronger than I seem. I can remember bad things, much worse than this breakup that I got myself through. I recognize that I am my own best advocate. I can keep my own company and be in a relationship with myself. I know that the relationship that I have with myself is the most important relationship in my life. I know that at the end of the day, I have to be my own lover. I know that unless I have a stable, loving, respect-filled relationship with myself, that I will never be able to have one with another guy. I am thankful for the non-romantic relationships in my life. I am thankful for my family, and for my friends, who are the family Iâve chosen. I know that regardless of my romantic status, my life is filled with love. I will never give up on love. I will, of course, let my heart heal, and wait for the right person to let in next. I will be patient, but hopeful. I will be alright. Iâm single again, and Iâm going to be okay.
